Hoxie, Solomon. Papers, 1879-1912. 36 items

Books, booklets, clippings and letters, 1879-1912, relating to S[olomon]. Hoxie, and Holstein-Friesian, or Dutch-Friesian, cattle. Mostly printed material, including articles by Hoxie, with some manuscript notes. Some items in Dutch. Arranged chronologically.

  • Third Annual Report of the New York State Dairymen's Association with Transactions and Addresses for the Year 1879. Ilion, N.Y.: "Citizen" Steam Book and Job Printing House, 1880. 1 item (72 pages). Contribution by S. Hoxie on pages 15-21 entitled "A Glimpse at Dairy Husbandry in West Friesland." Solomon Hoxie is listed as the Treasurer on the Association on page 6. Box 10/4, folder 5.

  • S. Hoxie, "Friesian, or Dutch-Friesian Cattle." ca. 1883. 25 items. Clippings of article, with note attached stating "written by S. Hoxie & published about 1883 in Old Line Stock Journal now Breeder's Gazette. History of Dutch-Friesian Cattle in Europe & America up to 1883." Photocopies have been made of all pages since original clippings, pasted to sheets of paper, are very fragile. Originals have been retained. Box 10/4, folder 7.
  • C. van Eysinga and D. van Konijnenburg, to S. Hoxie of Whitestown, N.Y., June 3, 1885. 4 items. Manuscript letters, one in Dutch, with translation into English. Letter in English states that the Frisian [sic] Herdbook Association (Het Friesch Rundvee-Stamboek) unanimously resolved on the 23rd of May to offer Hoxie an Honorary Membership in their society, "which distinction, we flatter ourselves, will be accepted by you." Also, certificate in Dutch, and envelope. Box 10/4, folder 8.

Loomis family. Diaries, 1880-1912, and n.d. 4 folders

Typed transcript of diaries of the Loomis family of Ionia, Michigan; entries principally by Arthur Perkins Loomis, with some by his father, James Winship Loomis, or his wife, Carrie Sessions Loomis. The diaries describe farming operations, social life, and local and state politics. The transcription consists of approximately 450 typed pages, double spaced. Following the entries for 1912 there is an essay by Arthur Loomis on "Governors I have known" dealing with Michigan politics. There are also a three-page handwritten description of the diaries and the family, four pages of manuscript maps and diagrams showing the location and layout of the farm, a list of "Family and friends and relatives," and a 35 page index, mostly of personal names.
