Excerpt
Cottingham Farm's Shane Shewbridge shows off some organic heirloom tomatoes at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) summer farmers market opening of its 17th season at the USDA Whitten Building east parking lot in Washington, D.C., on Friday, May 31, 2012. This year's theme is Grow, Healthy, Eat Healthy and Be Healthy. USDA and Fuel Up to Play 60, in partnership with the National Dairy Council and the National Football League, invited residence, visitors and local school children to participate in opening day activities. Hip Hop Public Health featuring Easy A.D. from Cold Crush Brothers and disk jockey Artie Green play music and invite people to get up on stage to dance or hula hoop to get active. D.C. Truck Farm helps people know from what plants, herbs, fruit and produce come from by giving tail-gate tours of the garden growing in the bed of their pickup truck. The Peoples Garden Initiative and USDA Executive Master Gardeners gave away a variety of fruit and produce seedlings to include the ‘Abraham Lincoln’ Tomato in celebration of the USDA 150th Anniversary and to share their harvest. New features for 2012 include an on-site sign language interpreter, a hand washing station, and a USDA-certified organic vendor. Other products selling today are fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, baked goods, meats, kettle popcorn, local honey, hand-made soap and more.
