Subject
subsistence homesteads
Excerpt
Started as a Federal Subsistence Homesteads project in March, 1934, the El Monte Homesteads was transferred to the Resettlement Administration in June, 1935. Construction work was completed October 15, 1935.
The project was designed to enable low-income families to supplement their earnings by raising much of their own food on garden plots of about three-fourths of an acre which surrounded each home. With a growing season ex- tending through the entire year and soil suitable for raising a variety of crops, it is estimated that the residents can add about $200 a year to their regular incomes.
