  7. Recovery of Staphylococcal Enterotoxin in Multiple Phase Foods

    • Lipids are soluble in organic solvents and staphylococcal enterotoxins are water-soluble. This recognized feature can assist in the recovery of these toxins. Partitioning studies were conducted using a toxin-insoluble organic solvent (CHCl3) treatment for the extraction of toxins from the lipid portion of the tested food products.

    • Genetic sequences of a highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N8) virus in England have high homology to those detected in mainland Europe and Asia during 2014. Genetic characterization suggests this virus is an avian-adapted virus without specific affinity for zoonoses. Spatio-temporal detections of H5N8 imply a role for wild birds in virus spread.

  12. Estimating the burden of market loss due to aflatoxins in maize: methods and estimates for Thailand

    • This communication updates and enhances earlier estimates of the burden of market loss associated with aflatoxin contamination of maize in Thailand using two unrelated data sets. The first, supplied by Mars Petcare (Thailand) Ltd. was compiled in 2010 from two sets of 295 random samples of maize, one collected at harvest and the second after drying, from two regions that produce more than 70% of the commercially grown maize in Thailand.

    • Mycotoxins are among the most abundant contaminants in food and feed worldwide. Therefore, in the EU maximum levels are established, e.g. for the frequently occurring Fusarium toxins deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEA). Additional to DON and ZEA, modified mycotoxins are present in naturally contaminated grain products contributing significantly to the exposure of humans and animals with mycotoxins.

  14. Identification of a Novel Small Non-Coding RNA Modulating the Intracellular Survival of Brucella melitensis

    • Yufei Wang Bacterial small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs) are gene expression modulators respond to environmental changes, stressful conditions, and pathogenesis. In this study, by using a combined bioinformatic and experimental approach, eight novel sRNA genes were identified in intracellular pathogen Brucella melitensis. BSR0602, one sRNA that was highly induced in stationary phase, was further examined and found to modulate the intracellular survival of B. melitensis.

  24. Community-Onset Pyomyositis Caused by a Salmonella enterica Serovar Enteritidis Sequence Type 11 Strain Producing CTX-M-15 Extended-Spectrum {beta}-Lactamase [Case Reports]

    • We report a case of community-onset pyomyositis due to Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis in South Korea. The isolated strain was resistant to extended-spectrum cephalosporins and harbored sequence type 11 coproducing CTX-M-15 extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL). Physicians should be alert for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment since ESBL-producing nontyphoidal Salmonella infections are difficult to treat without initiation of appropriate empirical antibiotics.

    • Members of the genus Brucella have cell wall characteristics of Gram-negative bacteria, which in the most significant species includes O-polysaccharide (OPS). Serology is the most cost-effective means of detecting brucellosis, as infection with smooth strains of Brucella leads to the induction of high antibody titers against the OPS, an unbranched homopolymer of 4,6-dideoxy-4-formamido- d -mannopyranosyl residues ( d -Rha4NFo) that are variably α(1->2)- and α(1->3)-linked.
