  19. Comparative Genomics and Phenotypic Investigations Into Antibiotic, Heavy Metal, and Disinfectant Susceptibilities of Salmonella enterica Strains Isolated in Australia

    • Frontiers in Microbiology
    • Salmonella enterica is recognized as a major contributor of gastrointestinal illness worldwide. Concerns have been raised over the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistant strains of Salmonella isolated from animals and food, and the role of antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents such as biocides and heavy metals in the selection and dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria to human hosts.

  20. The Fate of Bacteria in Human Digestive Fluids: A New Perspective Into the Pathogenesis of Vibrio parahaemolyticus

    • Frontiers in Microbiology
    • Vibrio parahaemolyticus causes the most seafood attributed gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide and studies on pathogenesis during passage through the human digestive fluids are limited. An in vitro continuous model system mimicking passage through saliva, gastric and intestinal fluid was used to study the survival, morphology and virulence-related gene expression of 60 pathogenic and non-pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus strains. The changes to these 3 characteristics for the 60 V.

  21. Influence of oral administration of Akkermansia muciniphila on the tissue distribution and gut microbiota composition of acute and chronic cadmium exposure mice

    • FEMS Microbiology Letters
    • Cadmium (Cd) contamination is a serious food safety problem. Acute and chronic Cd exposure changes the gut microbiota composition and damages the gut barrier function. Akkermansia muciniphila (AKK), a promising candidate for the next-generation probiotics, has been reported to protect the mucus layer in the colon and significantly decrease the effects of Cd exposure in mice.
