  8. [ASAP] Eugenol Confers Cadmium Tolerance via Intensifying Endogenous Hydrogen Sulfide Signaling in Brassica rapa

    • Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry
    • Eugenol, a plant-derived small compound, shows great medicinal potential. However, whether and how eugenol regulates crop physiology remains elusive. Here we reported that eugenol induced Cd (cadmium) tolerance in the root of Brassica rapa. Roots were treated with eugenol and CdCl2 simultaneously (eugenol + Cd) or pretreated with eugenol followed by CdCl2 treatment (eugenol → Cd).

  17. Cronobacter spp. in Common Breast Milk Substitutes, Bogotá, Colombia

    • Emerging Infectious Diseases
    • In Bogotá, Colombia, a large number of babies are fed with breast milk substitutes made from corn and plantain starch. We found 34.3% of tested samples to be contaminated with Cronobacter spp.; C. sakazakii was the most recovered species. Our findings underscore the risk for contamination of breast milk substitutes.

  20. Decreased Food and Water Intake Attributable to Failing Sanitation in the United States

    • American Journal of Public Health
    • Driving to Lowndes County, Alabama, I am always conscious of my water consumption, as bathroom stops are few and far between. I am also mindful not to ask to use the restrooms in the homes I am visiting, in the event they are malfunctioning. This is life in rural Alabama, where toilets gurgle and indicate failing septic systems, which is often followed by potential overflowing into the home. The overflow can come in through the toilet, tub, or sink.
