• Poultry Science
•
Abstract
Supplementation of poultry diets with Diamond V Original XPC™ (XPC) has been proposed as a means to ameliorate the commonly observed loss of appetite and depression of growth in birds given a live coccidiosis vaccine. A study was conducted to compare the effects on bird performance of a live coccidiosis vaccine in broilers, with and without the dietary inclusion of XPC (1.25 g/kg).

10. Extraintestinal Pathogenic and Antimicrobial-Resistant Escherichia coli, Including Sequence Type 131 (ST131), from Retail Chicken Breasts in the United States in 2013 [Food Microbiology]

• Applied and Environmental Microbiology
• Chicken meat products are hypothesized to be vehicles for transmitting antimicrobial-resistant and extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) to consumers. To reassess this hypothesis in the current era of heightened concerns about antimicrobial use in food animals, we analyzed 175 chicken-source E. coli isolates from a 2013 Consumer Reports national survey. Isolates were screened by PCR for ExPEC-defining virulence genes.

11. Rapid Enrichment of Dehalococcoides-Like Bacteria by Partial Hydrophobic Separation [Environmental Microbiology]

• Applied and Environmental Microbiology
• Organohalide-respiring bacteria can be difficult to enrich and isolate, which can limit research on these important organisms. The goal of this research was to develop a method to rapidly (minutes to days) enrich these organisms from a mixed community. The method presented is based on the hypothesis that organohalide-respiring bacteria would be more hydrophobic than other bacteria as they dehalogenate hydrophobic compounds.

12. An Effective Counterselection System for Listeria monocytogenes and Its Use To Characterize the Monocin Genomic Region of Strain 10403S [Genetics and Molecular Biology]

• Applied and Environmental Microbiology
• Construction of Listeria monocytogenes mutants by allelic exchange has been laborious and time-consuming due to lack of proficient selection markers for the final recombination event, that is, a marker conveying substance sensitivity to the bacteria bearing it, enabling the exclusion of merodiploids and selection for plasmid loss. In order to address this issue, we engineered a counterselection marker based on a mutated phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase gene (pheS*).

13. Establishment and Validation of RNA-Based Predictive Models for Understanding Survival of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Oysters Stored at Low Temperatures [Food Microbiology]

• Applied and Environmental Microbiology
• This study developed RNA-based predictive models describing the survival of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) during storage at 0, 4, and 10°C. Postharvested oysters were inoculated with a cocktail of five V. parahaemolyticus strains and were then stored at 0, 4, and 10°C for 21 or 11 days. A real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) assay targeting expression of the tlh gene was used to evaluate the number of surviving V.
