Staphylococci can be both commensal and pathogenic bacteria that are widespread across the various ecological niches. We aimed to isolate staphylococci from owls and to characterize their antimicrobial resistance, virulence factors and genetic lineages.

  3. Rapid detection of florfenicol antibiotic residues in chicken meat using surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Gold nanoparticles were stabilized on the glass slides cost-effectively by “1-dodecanethiol.” Three factors, including “solvent types,” “spectroscopy times,” and “ ratio of gold nanoparticles and samples” were examined to optimize the spectrum acquisition.

  5. Hydroxytyrosol Alleviates Dextran Sulfate Sodium-Induced Colitis by Modulating Inflammatory Responses, Intestinal Barrier, and Microbiome

    • Hydroxytyrosol (HT), a polyphenol derived from olive oil, was examined against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis to study its potential in preventing colitis and the underlying mechanisms involved. The low dose and high dose of HT used in mice were 10 and 50 mg/kg, respectively. Research findings have shown that HT is effective in preventing colitis by alleviating the signs of colitis.

  6. The Potential Binding Interaction and Hydrolytic Mechanism of Carbaryl with the Novel Esterase PchA in Pseudomonas sp. PS21

    • Microbial bioremediation is a very potent and eco-friendly approach to alleviate pesticide pollution in agricultural ecosystems, and hydrolase is an effective element for contaminant degradation. In the present study, a novel Mn2+-dependent esterase, PchA, that efficiently hydrolyzes carbamate pesticides with aromatic structures was identified from Pseudomonas sp. PS21. The hydrolytic activity was confirmed to be related closely to the core catalytic domain, which consists of six residues.

  10. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in China: a multicentre longitudinal study and whole-genome sequencing

In this study, we conducted whole-genome sequencing on 565 MRSA isolates from 7 provinces and municipalities of China between 2014 and 2020. MRSA isolates were subjected to MLST, spa typing, SCCmec typing, analysis of virulence determinants and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

    • In biodesulfurization (BD) at haloalkaline and dO2-limited conditions, sulfide-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) effectively convert sulfide into elemental sulfur that can be used in agriculture as a fertilizer and fungicide. Here we show which bacteria are present in this biotechnological process. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of biomass from ten reactors sampled in 2018 indicated the presence of 444 bacterial Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs).

  20. Characterization of a Multidrug-Resistant Salmonella Enteritidis Clinical Strain Carrying a Novel Hybrid Plasmid

    • Salmonella Enteritidis clinical strain SAL045 isolated from an infant patient in China was subjected to whole genome sequencing. Strain SAL045 is resistant to 12 antibiotics tested including ampicillin and polymyxin E. A novel hybrid plasmid pS045A harboring 22 antibiotic resistance genes and 10 virulence genes was characterized. There were no sequences in the NCBI nucleotide database that completely covered the pS045A sequence.
