  1. Field investigation to determine the environmental source of PCBs in a pig farm

    • Food Chemistry
    • Author(s): Vincent Vaccher, Philippe Marchand, Mélanie Picherot, Gaud Dervilly-Pinel, Elodie Lesquin, Aline Brosseaud, Anaïs Venisseau, Bruno Le Bizec During a national monitoring plan, a pork fat sample was declared non-compliant for the sum of dioxins and PCB-DL (EU regulation). • Applied and Environmental Microbiology
    • Complete utilization of carbohydrate fractions is one of the prerequisites for obtaining economically favorable lignocellulosic biomass conversion. This study shows that xylan in untreated rice straw was saccharified to xylose in one step without chemical pretreatment, yielding 58.2% of the theoretically maximum value by Paenibacillus curdlanolyticus B-6 PcAxy43A, a weak lignin-binding trifunctional xylanolytic enzyme, endoxylanase/β-xylosidase/arabinoxylan arabinofuranohydrolase.

  22. The Arsenic Resistance-Associated Listeria Genomic Island LGI2 Exhibits Sequence and Integration Site Diversity and a Propensity for Three Listeria monocytogenes Clones with Enhanced Virulence [Food Microbiology]

    • Applied and Environmental Microbiology
    • In the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes, arsenic resistance is encountered primarily in serotype 4b clones considered to have enhanced virulence and is associated with an arsenic resistance gene cluster within a 35-kb chromosomal region, Listeria genomic island 2 (LGI2). LGI2 was first identified in strain Scott A and includes genes putatively involved in arsenic and cadmium resistance, DNA integration, conjugation, and pathogenicity.

  24. Reduction of in utero lead exposures in South African populations: Positive impact of unleaded petrol

    • PLOS ONE
    • Halina B. Röllin, Bukola Olutola, Kalavati Channa, Jon Ø. Odland

      Background

Prenatal exposure to lead (Pb) has been shown to have negative and irreversible health impacts on foetal and early childhood development, affecting morbidity and mortality in adulthood. This study aimed to assess in utero Pb exposure, examine birth outcomes, and identify confounding factors in the large cohort of South African population, following the legislated removal of Pb from petrol.
