To address this issue, thin 2–3 cm layer sand caps amended with activated carbon (AC) were investigated for the remediation of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contaminated marine sediments using 90-day mesocosms.

  2. Metal Accumulation and Ion Regulation in the Fish Hyphessobrycon luetkenii Living in a Site Chronically Contaminated by Copper: Insights from Translocation Experiments

    • Fish living in the João Dias creek (southern Brazil) have to deal with trace-metal contamination in the long-term basis, as this aquatic environment has been historically impacted by copper mining activities. In order to survive in this harsh environment, the local biota had to develop adaptations related to pollution tolerance. The aim of this study was to test if biochemical mechanisms related to osmoregulation were among these adaptations, using translocation experiments.

  3. Organochlorine and Metal Contaminants in the Blood Plasma of Green Sturgeon Caught in Washington Coastal Estuaries

    • Non-invasive monitoring was used to evaluate the concentrations of 40 contaminants in the blood plasma of the North American Green Sturgeon Acipenser medirostris caught and released from three estuaries in Washington State. The highest contaminant concentrations were found in fish caught in the most urbanized sites. Few statistical differences were found when evaluating contaminant levels according to sex, maturation stage, or distinct population segments of Green Sturgeon.

  4. Contamination of Water, Sediment and Fish with Residues of Pesticides Used in Cotton Production in Northern Benin

    • In Northern Benin, insecticides are used for cotton production. These insecticides can be easily transferred to water ponds close to cotton fields. To monitor insecticides levels in water, sediments and fish samples from water ponds, a GC–MS analytical method was developed to detect residues of endosulfan, DDT and its parent compounds, isomers of HCH, pyrethroids and chlorpyrifos.

  5. Microplastics Contamination in Commercial Green Mussels from Selected Wet Markets in Thailand

    • Mussels have been identified as sentinel organisms (around the world) that indicate microplastic (MP) pollution. Since they are filter feeders, they easily uptake MPs. Mussels sold in commercial markets have been identified as an ideal way to directly quantify human exposure to MPs through seafood consumption. There are no studies reported on MP contamination of market-sold species in Thailand.

We collected and analysed 64 eggs belonging to ten species of six feeding guilds, and compared organic chlorinated pesticide (OCP), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), and brominated flame retardants (BFR) residue concentrations and compositions.

  8. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Indoor Dust Across China: Occurrence, Sources and Cancer Risk Assessment

    • In this study, the occurrence of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was investigated in 31 household dusts that were sampled from 27 areas located in 10 provinces, China. The total concentrations of PAHs (∑ PAHs) were in the range of 613–10,111 ng·g−1 with a median of 2565 ng·g−1. The predominant PAHs were 2 to 3 ringed compounds, accounting for 85.3% of ∑ PAHs. The geographical location had little impact on the contents of PAHs.

  9. Hydrogeochemical Processes Governing Uranium Mobility: Inferences from the Anthropogenically Disturbed, Semi-arid Region of India

    • Khetri Copper Belt, Rajasthan, is anthropogenically active and geologically belongs to the Delhi super-group. A study was designed to understand the geochemical processes controlling the elemental mobility in the groundwater. Sampling sites were divided into three zones, i.e. copper, quartzite and granite mine zones depending on the type of mineral excavated. A total of 32 representative groundwater samples were collected and analysed for heavy metals and radionuclide (U) using ICP–MS.

  10. An Evaluation of Fish Tissue Monitoring Alternatives for Mercury and Selenium: Fish Muscle Biopsy Samples Versus Homogenized Whole Fillets

    • Fish contaminant studies with human health protection objectives typically focus on muscle tissue, recognizing that fillets are the commonly consumed tissue fraction. Muscle biopsy punch sampling for mercury analysis has recently been used as an alternative to harvesting fish for fillets; however, there is limited information comparing fillet plug results to whole fillet results.

    • The aquifer flowing beneath the Yucatan Peninsula, México, is one of the largest in the world and is in direct contact with the surface through “cenotes” (sinkholes) that have been documented to be contaminated with various classes of pollutants.   13. Heavy Rainfall Events Following the Dry Season Elevate Metal Contamination in Mining-Impacted Rivers: A Case Study of Wenyu River, Qinling, China

    • Heavy metal pollution of a mining-impacted river—the Wenyu River—and a short section of the river it joins, the Luo River, were investigated after heavy rainfall following a dry season in March 2015 and during a normal flow season in May 2015. Water samples were collected during these two periods, and sediment samples were obtained in May as the rain washed out the sediments in March.

  16. Distribution, Risk Assessment, and Sources of Trace Metals in Surface Sediments from the Sea Area of Macao, South China

    • Due to rapid economic development in the Pearl River Delta, South China, trace metals pose a significant threat to the coastal ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the spatial distribution, contamination status, ecological risk, and possible sources of trace metals in 150 surface sediment samples from the Macao sea area.

    • Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured in 23 seafood species widely consumed by the Korean population in the periods of 2005–2007, 2010–2011, and 2015–2017. The Σ82PCB (sum of 82 PCB congeners) and Σ19PBDE (sum of 19 PBDE congeners) concentrations in the seafood samples of 2015–2017 were 0.06–6.69 ng/g wet weight and 0.01–1.60 ng/g wet weight, respectively.
