  1. Emerging Contaminants in the Northeast Andean Foothills of Amazonia: The Case of Study of the City of Tena, Napo, Ecuador

    • This work is a study on the occurrence of emerging pollutants in the northeast Ecuadorian Amazon. Emerging contaminants (ECs)—caffeine, triclosan, estradiol, acetaminophen, nicotine, and ibuprofen—were quantified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry in rivers and streams of the Amazon basin near the city of Tena, Ecuador. For that, a total of 16 natural water samples were taken in 8 locations.

  2. Pollution Characteristics of Microplastics in Mollusks from the Coastal Area of Yantai, China

    • Microplastic pollution to the marine environment is a global issue. This study investigated microplastic pollution in ten species of different mollusks. Microplastic shape and size were determined under a microscope. Additionally, the polymer types were identified using Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (μ-FT-IR). The results showed that the microplastic abundance varied from 0.19 to 1.76 items/g (wet weight) and 4.3 to 36.6 items/individual.

  3. Screening and Analysis of Multiclass Veterinary Drug Residues in Animal Source Foods using UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap/MS

    • A rapid, simple, and sensitive method of detecting veterinary drug residues in animal food sources, including poultry and pork, was developed and validated. The method was optimized for over 155 veterinary drugs of 21 different classes. Sample pretreatment included a simple solid-liquid extraction step with 0.2% formic acid-acetonitrile-water and a purification step with a PRiME HLB (hydrophile-lipophile balance) solid-phase extraction cartridge.

    • Methylmercury (MeHg) is a toxic and bioaccumulative organo-metallic compound that is naturally produced in many ecosystems. Organisms that occupy the lower trophic positions in food webs may be key factors in the assessment of MeHg biomagnification between ecosystems. Here we present a review of the peer-reviewed literature examining MeHg bioaccumulation in freshwater invertebrates, focused principally on insects.

  6. Transport of Mobile Particles in Heavy Metal Contaminated Soil with Simulated Acid Rain Leaching

    • The soil contaminated with heavy metals requires special attention due to its adverse effects on health of human and animals. The effects of simulated acid rain with different pH values on transport of heavy metal in contaminated soil of Phyllostachys pubescens forest were studied by indoor leaching column test. The results revealed that particle size of soil was mainly concentrated in range of more than 50 μm.

    • The mining areas have faced severe pollution by caustic metals. In this study, heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cr, Cd, Pb and Ni) in the soil of an extremely large iron mine pit from Ningwu-Luohe metallogenic belt, one of the seven iron ore areas in China was characterized. SiO2 was predominant soil mineral composition as 57.0 ± 1.3 %, followed by considerable Al2O3 (23.1 ± 2.5 %) and Fe2O3 (8.58 ± 1.2 %).

  8. Tissue-Specific Expression of Genes Involved in Cellular Transportation in Common Carp ( Cyprinus carpio ) Exposed to Cadmium

    • Juvenile common carp were treated with Cd2+ at a sublethal concentration for Cyprinidae (6.4 mg/L). The expression of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunit genes (NR2A, NR2B) and ATP-binding cassette subfamily C member 1 gene (ABCC1) was compared between treated and untreated fish. In addition, cadmium accumulation in the fish tissues was assessed.

  9. Pesticide Mixtures in the Water-Column Versus Bottom-Sediments of Prairie Rivers

    • River water-column and bottom-sediments samples were screened for 160 pesticide compounds to compare the types of pesticides present in the water-column versus bottom-sediments, and between segments of rivers flowing through intensively-managed versus semi-natural habitats. Of the 35 pesticide compounds detected, current-use pesticides accounted for 96% (water) and 76% (bottom sediments). Pesticide mixtures were present in 72% (water) and 51% (sediment) of the total samples.

  23. Quantitative Relationship Between Paddy Soil Properties and Cadmium Content in Tobacco leaves

    • Tobacco readily accumulates cadmium (Cd), an unnecessary and poisonous element. A total of 107 soil and tobacco leaf samples were collected from South China, to clarify the quantitative relationship between soil properties and Cd content in tobacco leaves. The results showed that 86.9% of the total sampling points had soil cadmium in excess of standard value, and the ratio of active Cd content to total soil Cd content was 24.0%. The enrichment factor of tobacco Cd was 3.43.

  24. Monitoring of Organochlorine Pesticide Residues in Human Breast Milk in the Northern Governorates of Jordan in 2019/2020 Compared with the Results of 2015 Study

    • One hundred and twenty samples of breast milk were collected from five northern governorates and districts in Jordan in 2019 and 2020 to monitor results for organochlorine pesticides as organic contaminants. The results showed that 36 samples (30%) of total 120 analyzed samples were contaminated as follows: 16 samples (13.3%) were contaminated with dieldrin, 4 samples (3.3%) with p,p′-DDE, 4 samples (3.3%) with p,p′-DDD, 8 samples (6.7%) with p,p′-DDT and 4 samples (3.3%) with o,p′-DDE.
