  1. Spatial Distribution and Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Sediments of a Heavily Polluted Maozhou River, Southern China

    • In this study, eighteen 3.30-m-long sediment profiles were sampled in Maozhou River. In order to investigate the sediment pollution status and potential sources of heavy metals, we performed heavy metal contents, grain size, organic matter concentration, moisture concentration and total phosphorus analysis, and assessed the ecological risk of heavy metal pollution in the study area using enrichment coefficient, geo-accumulation index and potential ecological risk index.

  3. Unsubstituted and Methylated PAHs in Surface Sediment of Urban Rivers in the Red River Delta (Hanoi, Vietnam): Concentrations, Profiles, Sources, and Ecological Risk Assessment

    • Unsubstituted and methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (22 PAHs and 17 Me-PAHs) were examined in surface sediments collected from the Red River and four inner-city rivers of Hanoi City, Vietnam. Concentrations of total PAHs and Me-PAHs ranged from 52 to 920 (median 710) and from 70 to 2600 (median 1000) ng/g dry weight in samples of dry and wet seasons, respectively.

  4. Red Blood Cell Cytotoxicity Associated to Heavy Metals and Hydrocarbons Exposure in Flounder Fish from Two Regions of the Gulf of Mexico

    • Breast feathers of Neotropic Cormorants (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) from two nesting colonies in Lake Livingston (LALIV) and Richland Creek, Texas, were collected during 2014 and were analyzed for metals and metalloids. Mean concentrations of Al, As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, Sb, and Se were not significantly different in breast feathers of cormorants from the two locations or between sexes.

In the present study, genotoxicity was evaluated in the blood of giant toads (Rhinella marina) from Coatzacoalcos’ rural and industrial zones, and compared with laboratory toads.

  9. Comparison of the Heavy Metals, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Nickel, and Zinc Between Muscle and Gills of Four Benthic Fish Species from Shif Island (Iran)

  12. Phytoremediation of Cadmium Contaminated Soil: Impacts on Morphological Traits, Proline Content and Stomata Parameters of Sweet Sorghum Seedlings

    • Phytoremediation is a green, simple, eco-friendly, sustainable, and cost-effective remediation technology to remove and degrade contaminants from soil. In this study, a germination experiment and a pot experiment were performed in greenhouse to evaluate cadmium toxicity and phytoremediation capacity. The results showed that there was the highest membership function value of cadmium (MFVC) in KFJT-3 than that of KFJT-CK and KFJT-1, the value being 0.473, 0.456 and 0.413, respectively.

  13. Speciation and Potential Ecological Risk of Heavy Metals in Soils from Overlapped Areas of Farmland and Coal Resources in Northern Xuzhou, China

    • Contamination caused by heavy metals (HMs) in soil of overlapped area of farmland and coal resources (OAFCR) has impact on crops. The concentrations and speciation of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were investigated in topsoil of an OAFCR in Xuzhou, China. The results showed that mean concentrations of all six metals were higher than the background values of Xuzhou city and Cd was moderate accumulated with the maximum Igeo equalled to 2.13.

  14. Influences of Heavy Metals and Salt on Seed Germination and Seedling Characteristics of Halophyte Halogeton glomeratus

    • This study aimed to compare biochemical and histological biomarkers in oysters to identify impacted areas in a Brazilian port region. Oysters belonging to the Crassostrea genus were collected in two points in São José Bay (Brazil): (A1) Curupu Island (control area) and (A2) Braga Port (impacted area). Digestive glands from oysters were used to analyze the enzymatic activity of glutathione S-transferase and Catalase. The gills were used for standard histology analyses.

  19. Effect of Lead Exposure on Jumping Ability in Pelophylax nigromaculata

    • Jumping ability determines the likelihood of survival and reproduction of amphibians. To study the toxic effect of lead (Pb) on the jumping ability of amphibians, Pelophylax nigromaculata were treated with 0, 1 and 10 mg/L Pb for 10 days and 20 days each. The results showed that for both treatment time (10 days and 20 days), compared to the control group, the 1 mg/L Pb treatment had no significant effect on jumping parameters.

  21. Acid Generation and Heavy Metal Leachability from Lignite Spoil Heaps: Impact to the Topsoils of Oropos Basin, North Attica, Greece

    • The disposal of lignite spoil and tailings poses a major environmental problem in lignite mining sites which is associated with the oxidation of sulfide minerals contained in the primary ore. This process renders acidic effluents. Lignite mining in the Oropos Neogene basin, North Attica, Greece operated since the last century and ceased in the late 1960s. Piles of complex waste material are dispersed close to the mining sites.

We also detected the expressions of metallothionein (MT), caspase-3 and p53 in hepatopancreas of shrimp exposed to 0, 5.25 and 10.5 mg/L Cd (the 24 h median lethal concentration, 24 h LC50) at 0, 3, 12, 24 and 48 h.
