Research Publications (Food Safety)

This page tracks research articles published in national and international peer-reviewed journals. Recent articles are available ahead of print and searchable by Journal, Article Title, and Category. Research publications are tracked across six categories: Bacterial Pathogens, Chemical Contaminants, Natural Toxins, Parasites, Produce Safety, and Viruses. Articles produced by USDA Grant Funding Agencies (requires login) and FDA Grant Funding Agencies (requires login) are also tracked in Scopus.

  5. Acute Complications and Sequelae from Foodborne Infections: Informing Priorities for Cost of Foodborne Illness Estimates

    • Foodborne Pathogens and Disease
    • Cost of foodborne illness (CoFI) estimates provide estimates of the overall impact of foodborne illnesses, including hospitalizations, long-term complications, and deaths. CoFI estimates are needed in countries that require cost–benefit analysis as part of the process of adopting new regulations, as is the case in the United States. Monetary estimates of the impact of disease also provide a meaningful way of communicating with the public about the impact of foodborne disease.

  6. Chronic Gastrointestinal and Joint-Related Sequelae Associated with Common Foodborne Illnesses: A Scoping Review

    • Foodborne Pathogens and Disease
    • To strengthen the burden estimates for chronic sequelae of foodborne illness, we conducted a scoping review of the current literature for common foodborne pathogens and their associated sequelae. We aim to describe the current literature and gaps in knowledge of chronic sequelae associated with common foodborne illnesses. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science for peer-reviewed articles published January 1, 2000 to April 1, 2018.

  7. Salmonella Serotypes: A Novel Measure of Association with Foodborne Transmission

    • Foodborne Pathogens and Disease
    • Most nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) illnesses in the United States are thought to be foodborne. However, transmission routes likely vary among the different serotypes. We developed a relative ranking of NTS serotypes according to the strength of their association with foodborne transmission.

  8. Salmonella enterica mcr-1 Positive from Food in Brazil: Detection and Characterization

    • Foodborne Pathogens and Disease
    • The mcr-1 gene has been identified in bacterial isolates obtained from humans, animals, environment, and food, including Salmonella spp., which is one of the major foodborne pathogens worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of mcr-1 gene in Salmonella spp. from food produced in Brazil and to characterize the isolates harboring this gene. A total of 490 Salmonella spp.
