The research project will develop a representative healthy food 'indicator basket' to consider how availability and affordability of healthy food varies by various determinants of access. In June 2003, the Food Standards Agency Scotland (FSAS), Communities Scotland, the Scottish Executive, Scottish Community Diet Project, Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) and NHS Health Scotland organised a conference entitled "No Fare!" to discuss working together for fairer access to a healthy diet in Scotland, a report of which is available from The Stationery Office Bookshop (TSO).

The conference highlighted the need to understand the issues influencing food choice which are central to overcoming barriers to dietary behaviour change, including the need for further investigation of food access in Scotland.

The learning from this work will be essential to ensure appropriate policy development by the Food Standards Agency and Scottish Executive Health Department (SEHD) as well as informing its partnership working with other Government Departments.
