AMERICAN INDIAN SMALL TO MEDIUM-SIZED FARMS PROFITABILITY AND RISK RELATED TO RESERVATION LAND ACCESS

Objective

The long-term goal and supporting objectives of this proposed project are to increase the sustainability of American Indian small to medium-size livestock and crop producers by increasing their ability to adhere to new leasing regulations based on dynamic and changing American Indian land tenure system. The short-term goal is to increase small to medium-sized livestock producers' ability to increase and sustain farm and ranch access to land to increase sustainability of the entire operation.Evaluate reservation livestock and crops in Arizona, Nevada, South Dakota, and Utah that are impacted by leasing regulations under the American Indian Probate Reform Act (AIPRA);Assess profitability of tribal livestock and crop enterprises;Assess risk and profitability to compare enterprise strategies post AIPRA regulations;Increase the capacity of American Indian producers and Tribes to sustain agricultural operations under new regulations from the American Indian Probate Reform Act (AIPRA); andInvestigate best practices in land leasing to grow and sustain American Indian operations.
