BIOMANUFACTURING OF FRESH IRRIGATION WATER FROM SALINE AGRICULTURAL DRAINAGE WATER USING A NOVEL ALGAE-BASED ION PUMPING MEMBRANE PROCESS

Objective

The seed project has the following research objectives:(1) Engineer algae to desalinate brackish water by pumping ions across their cellular membranes.(2) Develop precision-fabricated microporous scaffolds for algae-based bio-desalination membranes. (3) Develop a nitrate-assisted modular photochemical oxidation process to degrade chemical contaminants in brackish groundwater. (4) Consider the economics associated with the biomanufacturing of irrigation water with environmental remediation.
