Biotechnology Assisted Development of Iron and Zinc Dense Beans to Combat Micronutrient Deficiencies in E. Africa

Objective

Determine the amount of bioavailable Fe in Fe-dense seeds from about 20 select genotypes of bean.
<p>
Select genotypes of Fe-dense beans supplied by the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT) from their breeding program will be autoclaved, dried and ground. Samples of bean homogenates will be used in an in vitro Caco-2 cell model to determine bioavailable iron content of the bean samples.
