Catalyzing Transdisciplinary Exchange to Advance Functional Foods, Bioactive Food Components and Human Health

Objective

Conference objectives are: 1) To engage Kannapolis Scholars from a USDA-AFRI funded training grant in facilitation of transdisciplinary scientific exchange and conference planning, hosting and implementation.
2) Coordinate a day-long conversation about the effectiveness and direction of current wellness research, policies and initiatives (Summer of 2012).
3) Bring together community members, academics and policy makers for the mutual benefit of learning more about the interconnections between obesity and exercise.
4) Take away ideas for transdisciplinary solutions involving scientists, government officials, industry representatives and stakeholders, ensuring the conversation is no longer 'lost in translation'.

Non-Technical Summary:
A symposium will be held at the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, NC in the summer of 2012 to discuss the interrelationships between obesity and exercise. The transdisciplinary conference will bring together students, faculty, government and industry scientists and stakeholders for a day-long discussion. The symposium will include invited and local speakers addressing various aspects of the subject with a combination of lectures as well as panel and round-table discussions. A group of research fellows (named as Kannapolis Scholars), who are funded by a USDA-AFRI training grant, will plan and host the event. The goal is to foster a creative transdisciplinary exchange among conference attendees. This will be achieved by concentrating transdisciplinary presentations into a focused, single-day program, and by charging the speakers to engage round-table discussion among attendees. The conference will be simultaneously webcast and a proceedings article will be published and a press release and a YouTube video will be prepared to disseminate highlights of the conference.
