This research project aims to improve our understanding of how one group of harmful chemicals sometimes found in food may cause cancer.

This project will investigate the effects of a chemical representative of a class of harmful substances found in food on cellular (e.g. cell growth and survival) and genomic (e.g. gene mutation and expression) processes.

The analysis will be performed in cultured cells from the tissue in which the harmful chemical can cause cancer and also in cells from an alternative tissue.

The effects of the chemicals on gene expression in target and non-target tissues will also be investigated in a second experimental model system.
Some harmful chemicals found in food may cause cancer. However, the possible mechanisms involved remain poorly understood.

This project aims to identify the key events that take place during the initial stages of the carcinogenic process.
