This Group has identified several virulence factors that are involved in the induction of Salmonella-induced inflammation and has shown that this is both host- and serotype-specific. Several unconnected studies have demonstrated that Salmonella modulation of pro- inflammatory cytokines can be both host- and serotype- dependent. <P>
In this proposal we aim to study Salmonella- induced intestinal inflammatory responses in the context of pathogenesis and host- specificity in a coordinated study using strains of defined virulence in pigs. Determining how Salmonella modulate intestinal inflammatory responses in the context of host specificity is potentially essential for understanding the pathogenesis of this complex zoonotic pathogen.
