CITY OF SUTHERLIN COMPOSTING AND FOOD WASTE REDUCTION (CFWR) PILOT PROGRAM

Objective

Establish infrastructure for food waste collection in the City of Sutherlin by collaborating with Sutherlin Sanitary Services. Sutherlin Sanitary Services will be responsible for developing and scheduling the food waste collection route, ensuring efficient delivery to the composting facility, HealTerra.Divert 10-15 tons of food waste from the landfill annually and process it into compost products.Produce more than 20 tons of compost and worm castings, generating $15,000 in gross receipts in 2024 to support the composting facility and its work helping veterans (economic benefits).Increase the use of compost (as a natural fertilizer and soil amendment) in the community by making it more accessible. Raise awareness about its positive effects on improving soil health, water retention, and combating drought with the ultimate goal of replacing synthetic fertilizers and reducing dependence on them. This will include developing and executing an outreach campaign in the community.Assist the composting facility in enhancing its technical capacity by acquiring equipment for screening compost. This initiative aims to facilitate large-scale production, making compost more accessible to the community.
