Code of Practice to Reduce Fusarium and Ochratoxin A in Cereals.

Objective

A literature review will be completed to determine the scientific evidence to support Good Agricultural Practice and good processing practice to reduce fusarium mycotoxins and ochratoxin A in cereals in the UK. Based on this body of evidence and the EC recommendation on the reduction of fusarium toxins in cereals (2006/583/EC), a draft UK Code of Practice incorporating all available evidence and taking into account environmental and economical considerations will be composed and circulated to cereal Industry stakeholders for comment. The proposed Code of Practice will be submitted to the FSA for consideration with copies of the stakeholders' comments and responses to them. A final approved Code of Practice will then be agreed and distributed to the arable sector.

Under certain conditions, cereals can be contaminated with fusarium mycotoxins (developing mainly in the field) and ochratoxin A (developing normally during storage). Both of these mycotoxins are harmful to humans and European Commission (EC) Regulations set limits for these toxins in cereals. The EC also requires that growers are advised of Good Agricultural Practice in order to meet the limits set. This project will provide separate codes of practice for the reduction of fusarium mycotoxins and ochratoxin A, for distribution to growers and advisers in the UK..
