Cooperative Agreement for Dr. Preben Willeberg

Objective

Modeling--Collaborate in the development and validation of models developed at CEAH and CADMS, in particular providing actual population data from Denmark and potentially other EU member countries including animal premises and movement data.
Establish collaboration between CEAH, UC Davis/CADMS and the International EpiLab.
Internationally related activities, including the OIE.

More information

NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY: To establish a collaboration between CEAH, UC Davis CADMS, and the International EpiLab in order to efficiently share information and resources regarding surveillance and disease control.

APPROACH: Arrange simulation exercises for model validation and evaluation between CADMS, CEAH, the International Epi Lab and EU members with expanded data sets. Assist in implementing BioPortal IT web portal system for animal disease information access, analysis, and reporting. Explore the potential use of wild animal population data in modeling the spread of avian influenza among poultry. Identify critical parameters of importance for spread of disease in different types of populations/production systems occurring in Europe and in the US. The International EpiLab is now part of the Danish Technical University. UC Davis and the former Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University had a collaboration agreement that may need to be updated with the new university partner. The EpiLab has the potential to access EU funding sources for joint projects with UC Davis/CADMS and CEAH. Additional EU member state institutions need to be identified. Approval of funds will be dependent on a proportion of the resoureces required already being secured. Both CEAH and the International EpiLab are collaborating centers of the OIE in areas of surveillance and disease control, and as such are looking to establish formal collaboration links to enhance their mission and avoid duplication of efforts. Serve as a liaison for CADMS, UC Davis, CEAH and USDA/APHIS with European and other international organizations and institutions, including the OIE, that are active within animal disease surveillance and control. Assist in the development of U.S.-based international centers of excellence in global animal health surveillance, global animal health policy development, etc. Develop a close and productive working relationship between OIE, CEHA and CADMS for purposes of obtaining global information on animal diseases and of developing global animal disease surveillance systems. Assist in the development of a global FMD virus genomic surveillance system by helping to establish cooperative agreements with countries, agencies, and laboratories. It is anticipated that the OIE will become involved in providing guidance on the use of models in disease control planning. By joining efforts with CEAH and the International EpiLab, UC Davis/CADMS would gain access and visibility in order to participate in further discussions at the international level.
