To Determine the Efficacy of the Axenohl and Its Formulations in Poultry Processing Applications

Objective

To better understand the factors affecting bacterial contamination and biofilm formulation on surfaces by evaluating the effectiveness of AxenohlTM and its variable formulations for applications in the poultry processing environment, especially as an alternative disinfectant for chlorine.

More information

We plan to develop methods that measure bacterial contamination and biofilm formulation on surfaces and to develop efficacious applications that will prevent or remove microbial contamination and biofilms in the poultry processing environment. An assay will be developed and tested to determine the activity and stability of the compound against bacterial growth in the planktonic and sessile conditions in the laboratory, and we will develop an assay for testing effectiveness of the compound against growth of pathogens on food contact surfaces, including establishing the residual disinfection time of the compound on surfaces. The research will evaluate the compound separately or in conjunction with additives as an alternative agent to reduce the use of chlorine in the poultry processing environment. Methods will be developed to sample biofilms in appropriate areas of application for this compound in the poultry processing environment and evaluate the compound for effectiveness on composite microbial growth and biofilm formation.
