Determine Infection Rate and Distribution of Avian Pathogens in Wild Birds of Midwestern and Southeastern U.S. for Homeland Sec. Surveillance

Objective

Determine infection rate and distribution of avian influenza virus and, Newcastle disease and other paramyxoviruses in wild birds of the Midwestern and Southeastern USA. Provide these viruses to USDA for development of a molecular epidemiologic map.

More information

Approach- Scientists at the University of Georgia Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study will collect samples (intestinal and respiratory swabs) from wild birds in the Midwestern and Southeastern USA and Canada in cooperation with federal and state wildlife personnel. The samples will be screened for avian influenza, Newcastle's disease and other paramyxoviruses using various virus isolation techniques. Isolated viruses will be transferred to USDA for virus identification and subtyped. Selected viral genes will be sequenced and analyzed
