Development of Chemical Methods to Provide Pure Authenticated Standards for Toxic Dehydropyrrolizidine Alkaloids (DHPAs) and their N-oxides

Objective

Demonstrate and validate a standardized method for the quantitative analysis of toxic dehydropyrrolizidine alkaloids (DHPAs) from plants poisonous to livestock and humans by ; 1) Developing extraction, identification and quantitative methods; 2) validating the analytical process in different matrices according to the AOAC International Guidelines for Single Laboratory Validation of chemical Methods for Botanicals; and 3) establish and validate response factors for “difficult to manage” DHPAs relative to “easy to manage” secondary standards. 4) provide purified DHPA’s for toxicology testing and verification.
