DIALREL - Religious Slaughter: Improving Knowledge and Expertise through Dialogue and Debate on Issues of Welfare, Legislation and Socioeconomic Aspects

<p>The proposed specific support action is intended to address issues relating to the practice of religious slaughter and the market and consumers. These include a review of national legislation and research, an analysis of the scale of practices, the influence of diverse religious beliefs on slaughter practices and the extent to which food consumption patterns are affected as well as public and consumer concerns for the welfare of animals intended for human consumption. The principle aims of this project will be to explore the conditions for promoting the dialogue between interested parties and stakeholders and facilitating the adoption of good religious slaughter practices. The additional aim will be to review and propose a mechanism for implementation and monitoring of good practices. Objectives:</p>

<ol>
<li>To promote the debate and social dialogue within member states and candidate countries on the practices surrounding the slaughter of animals by religious methods (Muslim method:halal/zabiha;Jewish method:shechita).</li>
<li>Long term objective: To improve welfare of farm animals and promote a consensus for acceptable standards of procedures during religious slaughter that would result in harmonization of techniques and regulations within the European Union.</li>
