DIOXINS AND OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINANTS IN CATFISH ON THE U.S. MARKET

Objective

This study will use a portion of the 744 catfish samples collected by USDA under the Pesticide Data Program to conduct an exploratory assessment of catfish product for the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), a class of flame retardants. Approximately 200 catfish samples will be analyzed for these contaminants. The study aims to expand on the results of prior surveys conducted on other FSIS regulated products (meat and poultry), to fulfill FSIS¿ responsibility to conduct residue analyses for residues of concern in catfish commodities, and, if any unusual contaminations are found, to identify possible sources of these contaminants into the food supply.
