Ecology of E-coli 0157:H7 in Beef Cow-Calf Operations from Ranch through Feedlot

Objective

Objective 1:To develop and validate bacteriological culture techniques for the detection of E. coli O157:H7 in cattle feeds. Objective 2:To investigate the effects of diet and ionophore (monensin) use on fecal shedding of E. coli O157:H7 in growing cattle. Objective 3:To investigate the effect of antibiotic use on fecal shedding of E. coli O157:H7 in pre-weaned calves. Objective 4: To develop and validate the use of PCR-based diagnostic methods to quantify the level of E. coli O157:H7 in fecal and intestinal content samples.
