Ecology, Epidemiology, and Control of Salmonella and other Human Enteropathogens in Poultry Products

Objective

To grow birds with reduced levels of salmonellae, c. perfringens, and other human enteropathogens, Good Production Practices (GPP) guidelines will be developed for breeder farms, hatcheries and grow-out.

More information

Develop a real time live animal model which provides spatial and temporal data on intestinal colonization characteristics,

Identify, develop, and optimize molecular techniques to track salmonellae and other pathogens,

Establish epidemiological baselines of sources and quantities of salmonellae and C. perfringens in birds and on farms and facilities with a history of known pathogen contamination,

Implement specific interventions to control these pathogens,

Conduct folow-up epidemiology studies to confirm eficacy of interventions, and

Use the knowledge gained in these studies to write GPP guidelines for the poultry industry.
