The research seeks to advance the competitiveness of agricultural products in Washington State through 1) solving specific technical barriers to exports; 2) guiding exporters on changing trade rules, technical barriers to trade, sanitary and phytosanitary issues, biotechnology issues, and consumer preferences; 3) developing new products and processes for export; and 4) developing value-added food systems and alternative crops as well as new industrial uses of agricultural and forest products for the international marketplace.
Non-Technical Summary: The profitability of Pacific Northwest agriculture depends on successful exporting. However, competition for export markets is intensifying. The purpose of this project is to provide Pacific Northwest exporters with crucial information, technical problem-solving and new products and processes that enhance competitiveness. <P> Approach: The above objectives are divided into subobjectives focusing on particular markets, products, or technical problems. Teams of scientists work with industry in systematically executing each subproject. Different approaches using the most appropriate scientific tools will be used in each subproject with the understanding that project results will be subjected to scientific peer review and industry testing.
