Evaluation of Corn Hybrids for Resistance to Aflatoxin Accumulation

Objective

To expedite the transfer of resistance to aflatoxin into commercially available corn hybrids.

To identify corn hybrids with high yield potential, desirable agronomic qualities, and resistance to aflatoxin accumulation.

To compare two methods of inoculating developing corn ears with fungal spore suspensions for evaluations of resistance to aflatoxin accumulation.

More information

Monsanto will furnish to ARS seed of 50 corn hybrids including some developed using germplasm released by ARS as a source of resistance to aflatoxin accumulation. ARS will evaluate these hybrids, as well as some developed by ARS, for aflatoxin accumulation in field tests in Mississippi. Developing corn ears will be inoculated with Aspergillus flavus spore suspensions using two methods of inoculation, one that causes kernel wounding and one that does not. Mature ears will be harvested and assayed for aflatoxin accumulation.

The results of this research will be used in making decisions related to marketability of hybrids and in developing more efficient field evaluation techniques.
