The Evaluation of Effective Enforcement Approaches for Food Safety in SMEs

Objective

The project had three stages:

The theoretical background to the research problem was examined and a 'compliance decision model' developed. The model described the general decision making process of compliance in businesses and identified potential factors influencing this process;

The effect of different local authority interventions was examined using qualitative and quantitative approaches; and

The effect of different local authority interventions was evaluated using the compliance decision model as an analytical tool.

Case studies were carried out in eight local authorities showing extreme levels of deprivation, formal enforcement and educational activity. In total 81 SMEs were included in the study.

More information

This project was commissioned to investigate the compliance decision process within food small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in order to understand the impact of barriers and motivators relevant to the process and the ways in which different intervention approaches impact upon this compliance process.
