Evaluation of Fungicides to Control FHB on Soft Red Winter Wheat in Virginia

Objective

Establish and evaluate uniform fungicide treatment trials for Fusarium head blight (FHB) control in spring/barley regions and in winter wheat regions in Virginia.

More information

Approach: In Virginia, establish no-tillage planted into corn residues in October, 2004. Use soft red winter wheat cultivar Sisson. Use a core set of fungicides and rates established by the Chemical and Biological Control of the USWBSI in December. Apply fungicides with a CO2-pressurized backpack sprayer at 40 psi, 20 gpa. Take disease ratings at soft dough stage of kernel development, FHB incidence, FHB severity, and the FNB Index. Assess other head incidence and severity, if present, along with any significant foliar diseases. Harvest plots for yield and quality. Determine DON concentrations at Michigan State University laboratory of Dr. Pat Hart.
