Extending Food Safety Training to Frontline Communicators with Seafood Harvesters

Objective

General ObjectiveCreate a broader community of food safety professionals by enhancing the ability of frontline communicators such as fleet managers, dock managers, buyers, or other similar positions, to effectively communicate food safety and sanitation best practices to seafood harvesters. This will be accomplished by expansion of an existing food safety training program, Better Seafood Processing School (BSPS), to this non-traditional audience. Frontline communicators are in the best position to reach and influence a hard to reach audience, the seafood harvester. The current team involved with the planning of the BSPS includes stakeholder representation with expertise in food safety training from Trident, Pacific Seafoods, Ocean Beauty and the Seafood Products Association. As indicated in Figure 1 by the breadth of partners this team recruited last year (in bold), this planning committee is very well networked and has successfully brought in experts to present and provide hands-on training on a wide breadth of seafood safety, sanitation and quality issues critical to this industry.Specific objectivesOrganize, plan, and deliver BSPS training in FY2020 and FY2021The PD will organize monthly conference calls with planning committee and meet in person twice annually.Develop and administer pre- and post-assessment surveys with input from the Western Regional Center to Enhance Food Safety.Pre- and post-assessment will measure basic food safety, sanitation, and seafood quality responses.Share training dates and website links with Western Regional Center to Enhance Food Safety.Expand food safety training using the BSPS trainings to frontline communicators at seafood primary processing plants. This is also intended to create a more robust network of food safety education professionals at primary seafood processors.Identify frontline communicators at seafood primary processing plants to attend BSPS trainings.Priority will be given to individuals at the smallest processing facilities.Identify frontline communicator with seafood harvesters. This includes personnel such as fleet managers, dock managers, buyers or in another equivalent position.Invite candidates and provide support to attend training. We will target support for 15 frontline communicators per year.Eligible support for reimbursement will include registration, transportation, and lodging support (meal support captured with registration costs. Attendees receive all meals on day 1 and breakfast and lunch on day 2.Capture demographic data on invited candidates for progress and final reports.Evaluate data from pre- and post-assessment and exit surveys.Analyze data, as appropriate, using statistical software (ex: JMP, Qualtrics)Provide progress and final reports.Share progress and final reports with Western Regional Center to Enhance Food Safety.
