The Center for Food Security and Public Health has been working with the egg industry and APHIS to create a "Rapid Decision-Making Tool" to allow movement of eggs and egg products from non-infected premises within an avian influenza Control Area since 2007. <P>
In the last year, the CFSPH and the University of Minnesota, Center for Animal Health and Food Safety worked with APHIS and the industry to integrate the efforts of several groups, including the FAST Eggs Plan, into the Secure Egg Supply Plan. <P>
The FAST Eggs Plan is the preparedness component of the Secure Egg Supply Plan and will facilitate a rapid and coordinated approach to movement of eggs from a control zone in the event of an HPAI outbreak. For this portion of the project, the CFSPH will continue and enhance previous efforts to educate producers, potential Incident Commanders, APHIS and State Animal Health Officials on the FAST Eggs Plan and to encourage them to use the plan in multiple states. <P>
CFSPH is currently working with the State of Iowa on a FAST Eggs Plan pilot project, and other states are expected to also launch pilot projects. Results of these projects will be analyzed and adjustments in the plan will be made as needed. The CFSPH is working with officials at Texas A&M to explore the potential for the FAST Eggs database to be incorporated into a Dashboard program for emergency management which they are developing.
