FLORIDA PARISHES ARENA COMPOSTING FACILITY

Objective

II. Goals and Objectives It is this project's objective to set up an on-site composting and recycling program that can serve several functions:Reduce to zero the amount of organic waste going into the landfill from this and surrounding facilities;finalize the detailed planning of the project to also include various partners and the public;serve as amonitored and evaluated "green" public project that can be used as a demonstration project to be duplicated in other locations;provide a composted waste stream that can be recycled for other uses, such as for public landscaping projects, gardening and soil enhancement, balancing soil density and nutrient enrichment. The project looks to minimize landfill inputs fromTangipahoaParish Government facilities and partners through the reuse of waste generated from operations. The project could mitigate upwards of 22 annual tons of bedding waste from the landfill while providing a free commodity to Tangipahoa Parish's many historically underserved communities. This site is centrally located in Tangipahoa Parish which will allow for access to the product in both the rural north end of the parish as well as the metropolitan areas located to the south. The site addresses racial equity by being located entirely, and immediately servicing, the Justice40 community(seeappx.5).The compost produced will also reduce the reliance on fertilizers in thecommunity, helping to preserve our natural habitats and reduce runoff. Currently, all waste produced is sent to the landfill, the last resort on the food recovery hierarchy (see appx. 8) It isour intent togreatly reduceour relianceon this measure and produce compost for the advocacy of environmental justice.
