Food Safety and Security Monitoring Project

Objective

This project will provide support in terms of personnel, equipment and space for the Toxicology Laboratory of the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System to perform a large variety of tests on diverse animal and plant matrices in an accurate, flexible and timely manner. The personnel working in the lab are organized into an organic residue group, a general toxicology group, and an elemental analysis group.

More information

Non-Technical Summary: It is common knowledge that the animal and plant good supply is quite vulnerable as a vehicle for widespread human exposure to chemicals and/or for causing considerable economic disruption. The California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory (CAHFS) will be able to conduct credible food surveillance for a large number of potential toxicants and to provide surge capacity in the event of a recognized food contamination incident. <P> Approach: The CAHFS is well positioned to provide surveillance support and surge capacity in three of the four project areas (GC/MS), LC/MS, ICP/MS and has the expertise to expand rapidly in the fourth area (ELISA).
