Objective

Enhance collaboration amoung institutions, states, disciplines and functions
Revise original proposal for future funding opportunities in the national intergrated food safety program
Prepare team to manage a larger grant and build capacity for the food safety program

More information

Guam is a U.S. territory with a population of 150,000 people. Each year at least 150 cases and 50 outbreaks of foodborne diseases are reported. The lack of food safety knowledge and poor food handling practices are the two major reasons. The purpose of the project is to develop a stronger food safety proposal, to promote food safety education on Guam, and to effectively prevent and reduce foodborne diseases in Guam communities

The objectives will be achieved by inviting experts from other universities to assist planning and revising proposal for 2004, and by recruiting other university collaborators to support teh proposed food safety program on Guam.

Funds will be obtained to conduct research and training in food safety with regards to the traditional Guam food, Kelaguen. Food workers on Guam will be presented important food safety information for traditional foods used in the Western Pacific Region.
