Food Safety Education for Youth

Objective

Delaware's Food Safety Education for Youth will provide food handling education for 8 to 18 year olds. The program will emphasize good personal hygiene, appropriate cooling and heating of foods, and ways to avoid cross-contamination of food. The curriculum for 8-14 and 14-18 year olds will concentrate on preparing food at home and in food service establishments, respectively. <P>As a result of exposure to this curriculum, youth will understand the importance of and be able to use recommended hygiene practices, appropriate cooling and holding methods, and adequate cooking times and temperatures to reduce the risk of food-borne illness. Surveys before and after the classes will determine changes in food handling attitudes, knowledge, and practices of participants.
