To continue research to control aflatoxin contamination of crops by genetic improvement. Specific objectives are to confirm transformation, to test efficacy of chitin binding genes in transgenic embryos; to extend research to other fungus inhibiting genes and to multiply promising clones for field trials.
The following steps have to be completed to successfully produce engineered disease resistance in walnuts. Potentially useful genes will be identified and obtained; then the genes will be reconstructed into a vector with promoters and markers. The genes once inserted into the host tissue genes will be regenerated, confirmed as inserted, multiplied and efficacy tested. The sucessful transgenic plants will be regenerated and tested in field trails. Formerly 5325-42000-031-09S - 09/04)
