Goal is to develop anti-staphylococcal agents based on inhibition of pleiotropically-acting regulators of virulence genes that prove to be effective therapies in a future increasingly filled with antibiotic resistant pathogens. This research will reveal the mechanism by which SarA regulates agr gene expression. This information is prerequisite for the rational design of inhibitors. We propose that genetic, biochemical, and structural approaches will accomplish this goal.
