GETTING TO THE ROOT OF THE CORN-YIELD DRAG FOLLOWING COVER CROPS: A CEREAL RYE RESIDUE MANIPULATION EXPERIMENT

Objective

Our first goal is to identify the cause of 'yield drag' in corn by improving our understanding of the effect of cereal rye cover crop below- (root) and above- (shoot) ground biomass on corn growth and development, nitrogen dynamics, corn seedling disease, and pathogen density. Our second goal is to establish a long-term (>3-year) experiment testing the effects of corn and cereal rye cover crop biomass on soil organic carbon accrual.
