Identification of Proteins Associated with Aflatoxin Resistance in Maize

Objective

To isolate and identify proteins associated with spergillus flavus infection accumulation in corn,
To identify proteins, genes, and quantitative trait loci associated with resistance to A. flavus/aflatoxin, and
To develop
methods for quantifying levels of A. flavus infection of corn kernels and cobs that permit reliable identification of resistant corn genotypes and improved methods for resistance screening.

More information

Corn germplasm with different levels of resistance to A. flavus infection and aflatoxin accumulation will be grown in the field. Silks, kernels, and cobs will be collected from A. flavus inoculated and uninocualted ears at various stages of development. Proteins from different tissues of the resistant and susceptible genotypes will be extracted and compared. Their potential as molecular markers for aflatoxin resistance and their associations with resistance will be determined. Methods for quantifying levels of fungal infection such as the use of monoclonal antibodies will be evaluated.
