Identifying Strategies to Reduce Human Health Risks from Exposure to Manure Gases Containing Hydrogen Sulfide

Objective

Project Goal: To measure manure gas concentrations during manure storage agitation and throughout manure handling systems to supplement extension materials and outreach to better guide recommendations on human health risk reduction strategies.Specific Objectives:Define the manure gas plume during agitation of manure storages under different environmental and operational conditions by measuring the concentrations in field conditions.Measure the manure gas concentrations from various manure processing and handling systems to identify high risk areas.Use prior information and newly obtained information to develop updated extension materials to make more precise recommendations on management practices to reduce manure gas (including hydrogen sulfide) risks and on personal protections required in high risk areas.Integrate information into programming for manure systems.
