Indentification of the Source of the Campylobacter Summer Surge by MLST: A 6 Month Pilot Study

Objective

To validate MLST as a suitable method to type campylobacter.

Campylobacter strains will be collected from human and animal sources before and during the summer peak from the following sources:

Clinical samples from the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

Poultry broiler units (FSA project FS 3308)

Commonly eaten animal foodstuffs

Rectal swabs from domestic animals undertaking local veterinary treatment

Swabs from wild birds obtain through autopsy

Water from local rivers and streams

More information

Progress: This project was set back by the fact that the early summer peak of human cases with campylobacter was lower than usual in 2001. Whether or not this was related to foot and mouth restrictions was not clear. Sampling was to continue through a lower October revealed by the SCIEH data.
