INVESTIGATION OF THE HIGH HERD PREVALENCE OF BOVINE VIRAL DIARRHEA (BVD) IN DAIRY FARMS IN THE SOUTHEAST REGION OF THE UNITED STATES

Objective

The long-term goals of my laboratory is to apply novel approaches for pathogen identification and support the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of veterinary diseases. The goals of the current proposal are to investigate the unusually high herd prevalence of bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) in dairy farms in the southeast region of the United States and identify good control measures of BVD for dairy farmers in the region. There are three objectives in this study.Testing bulk-tank milk for bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) by real-time PCR from dairy farms in the southeast region.Genotyping, subgenotyoing and biotyping for BVDV by next-generation sequencing.Evaluating the management activities of the regional dairy farms for controlling BVD by a set of survey questionnaires.
