An Investigation into Multiple Glycosylation in Campylobacter Jejuni

Objective

In bacterial cells, glycosylation is an unusual and generally highly significant modification of proteins. This project builds on convincing data in the award holder's laboratory that has identified ten new C. jejuni glycoproteins including Peb3. Given the surface location and antigenic nature of glycoproteins we propose that they play a role in the interaction of C. jejuni with host cells and host immune systems. <P>
This project will identify mutants and characterise the putative glycoproteins and investigate their role, particularly in relation to binding to different cells. As Peb3 is a known adhesin, the structure of this glycoprotein will be determined. The study of these novel glycoproteins will provide much new data on this poorly studied pathogen that should facilitate improved diagnostic and intervention strategies to reduce the burden of C. jejuni disease.
