Local Events in the Tissues of Animals Infected with Salmonella

Objective

We hypothesise that host resistance to primary sub-lethal Salmonella infections relies on local events that operate, at least in part, independently from systemic host responses. Thus, the aim of the project is to analyse the local events that occur in the tissues of animals infected with S. enterica serovar Typhimurium.

Specifically we will investigate:

The identity and the state of activation of the phagocytic cells in infectious foci;
The site of bacterial localisation and the in situ activation or down- regulation of cytokine, chemokine, ROI, and RNI production;
The evolution of individual infectious foci in relation to local or systemic events.
The work will provide new fundamental knowledge on the pathogenesis of salmonellosis.
