MANAGEMENT OF PPO-INHIBITOR RESISTANT PALMER AMARANTH IN PEANUT WITH INTEGRATED APPROACHES AND QUANTIFICATION OF PALMER AMARANTH COMPETITION WITH COMMON ROW CROPS IN ALABAMA

Objective

The goal of this project is to increase knowledge of managing PPO-resistant Palmer amaranth in peanut, monitor spread of PPO-resistant Palmer amaranth, improve understand of mowing, cold stress and other environmental factors on Palmer grower, study how Palmer amaranth compete against major row crops for vital resources, generate extension recommendations and educational materials to better educate row crop growers and increase adoption of project recommended practices in SE USA to better control this problematic weed in major row crops, particularly in peanut.The objectives of this project are:To evaluate the efficacy of various integrated weed management programs that include a combination of cover crop biomass, tillage practices, mechanical control, agronomic practices, herbicide programs and weed wipers on PPO resistant Palmer amaranth control in peanut.To assess the conditions in which Palmer taproots will regrow after overwintering in warmer climates, as well as evaluate Palmer regrowth patterns and seed production from mowed plants or cut stumps.Continue to monitor, survey, and screen Palmer populations for potential PPO- resistance developments in major peanut producing areas.Quantifying water and nutrient competition between Palmer and three common row crops in Alabama (peanut, corn and cotton) and generate management practices based on data obtained from field experiments.Generate effective and sustainable Palmer amaranth management recommendations and promote them to row crop producers in Alabama and southeast USA for broader project impact
